  1. Welcome to Loon Magic:
  2. Experience the "Magic" of Loons!

  4. This CD-ROM contains an in-depth exploration of loons - "Loon Magic",
  5. and also "Loon Magic for Kids," an overview of loons for anyone looking
  6. for a taste of the magic of loons.  
  7.  
  8. We have included over 120 loon images, 60+ loon sounds, composed loon 
  9. music, in-depth text discussions, eight movies and five slideshows to enhance your "loon" experience.  This CD-ROM works in both Macintosh and Windows!
  10. You can also use this CD-ROM on your stereo -- over twenty minutes of composed 
  11. loon music to relax with and enjoy!

  15. QuickStart:
  16.        Insert the CD-ROM in your CD-ROM player.
  17.  
  18.      Macintosh:
  19.            Install the QuickTime 1.6 provided by dragging the
  20.            QuickTime file to your system folder and restarting.
  21.            Double click on the "Loon Magic" or "Loon Magic for Kids" 
  22.               loon icon.

  24.      Windows:
  25.            From DOS TYPE:
  26.            [drive]:   and enter (where drive is the letter of your CD-ROM
  27.                           drive)
  28.            Loons      and enter (this runs an install program in windows and  
  29.                            adds a program manager group with icons to run the
  30.                            software.  NOTE: it also copies two configuration
  31.                            files to your c:\windows directory,  they are
  32.                            "LoonMagc.ini" and "LoonKids.ini".)
  33.           - OR -  from the Windows Program manager's menu copy the 
  34.                  two INI files "LoonMagc.ini" and "LoonKids.ini" to your 
  35.                  Windows directory, and choose run and TYPE:
  36.                           [drive]:LoonMagc.exe           and press enter, or
  37.                           [drive]:LoonKids.exe           and press enter

  40. How to use the software:

  42.        Loon Magic for Kids
  43.           The Table of Contents provides a menu of topics to select and 
  44.             view while playing a QuickTime movie in the background.
  45.           The Table of Contents is accessed from anywhere by the clicking 
  46.             the Home button.  (A house with an "H")
  47.          
  48.           The sounds play by clicking the Ear button: (Ear with sound lines)

  50.           The QuickTime movies play by clicking the projector button.
  51.           (A movie projector icon)

  53.           The presentation "pages" can be paged through forwards or backwards
  54.           by clicking the left or right loon button with an arrow.

  57.       Loon Magic
  58.           The Table of Contents provides a menu of topics to select and view.
  59.           The Table of Contents is accessed from anywhere by clicking the Home 
  60.           button. (A house with an "H".)

  65.              Contents, QuickTime movies can be randomly played by clicking

  68.           The text is read and "scrolled" by clicking the up arrow or 
  69.              the down arrow.

  71.           The presentation "pages" can be paged through forwards or backwards
  72.              by clicking the left or right loon with the arrow.

  74.           Included, is the file "layout.txt," which provides a comprehensive 
  75.              "map" of the contents (topics and sub-topics) contained in the 
  76.              comprehensive text.

  78. Playing the movies:
  79.        You can play the movies outside the "Loon Magic" software.
  80.        You can view the images by topic, outside the "Loon Magic" software.
  81.        All the QuickTime movies are in the "Movies" directory/folder. 
  82.        Macintosh: Open the "Movies" folder and double click on a movie to 
  83.           play.
  84.        Windows: from the Windows Program manager's menu choose run and TYPE:
  85.                        [drive]:Player.exe  and press enter, and 
  86.                        choose the "open" from the file menu - open the 
  87.                        "Movies" directory and open anyone of the movies 
  88.                        "***.mov".

  91. The text in "Loon Magic" is available in files that can be accessed by your 
  92.    word processor!

  94.      Macintosh: open the "Mac TEXT" folder.
  95.      Windows: open the "pc_text" directory, the file "loonText.txt" is a 
  96.          guide to the topics and sub-topics available and their file names.

  100. Equipment/software needed or recommended:
  101.      Macintosh:
  102.         - 256 (8 bit) color or better color display
  103.         - QuickTime 1.6 (on CD-ROM) installed
  104.         - Mac II, LC or better
  105.     - System 6.0.7 or higher
  106.        - 2 megabytes RAM required, 5 preferred
  107.  
  108.      PC/Windows:
  109.         - DOS 5.0,
  110.         - Windows 3.1,
  111.         - 386 or better PC,
  112.         - Sound Board and speakers,
  113.         - 256 (8 bit) or better display.
  114.     - 2 megabytes RAM required, 5 preferred
  115.  
  116. QuickTime 1.6/1.1 is included.
  117.  
  118. 8 bit display (256 colors):
  119.        All the images are in an 8 bit format in the "Loon Magic" software, 
  120.        they are best viewed at 24 bit (millions of colors).  
  121.        To view the images in 24 bit format, access the slideshows in the 
  122.        "Movies" folder/directory.
  123.        The Movies are best viewed in 24 bit and are provided in 24 bit format, 
  124.        but they are accessable with an 8 bit display.

  126. Trouble Shooting:
  127.        The movies don't play.
  128.              Make sure that you have the latest version of QuickTime installed
  129.              Macintosh 1.6, Windows 1.1, They are both provided on the CD-ROM.
  130.        The sounds don't play.
  131.              Macintosh: Make sure that your sound control panel is not off.
  132.              Windows:  You need a sound board. 
  133.              Are the speakers/headphones connected and on?
  134.        The software doesn't fit on my screen
  135.              You need at least a 13" display (640x480) to view the entire 
  136.                 picture.
  137.              For a 12" Macintosh display we have provided the "Loon Magic for 
  138.                 kids" in a smaller 12" format.  The "Loon Magic" information 
  139.  
  140.                 is accessable by playing the movies in the "Movies" folder and 
  141.                 accessing the TEXT in the "Mac TEXT" folder.
  142.     White and black blotches on my screen
  143.        The images and sounds used in this software require large quantities of 
  144.           RAM at time.  If the program is unable to load all of the images 
  145.           needed into RAM for one screen, it may "blank" the images from the 
  146.           screen or cause sounds to be cut short of their full play.   
  147.        The problem may be resolved by quitting any other applications that may 
  148.        be running or by adding more RAM to your machine.
